Martha and Gordon James

James Pottery

Martha James received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Calgary in 1976. Gordon James studied at Alberta College of Art. After moving to Quadra Island we established James Pottery. Our studio and gallery allow us to work and display the functional and sculptural ceramics, drawings, prints and photographs that we create. We have exhibited our work nationally and internationally. Our work is a reflection of our life and surroundings on Quadra Island. The functional wares are intended to enhance the experience at the dining table as well as being decorative. Sculptural work is based on classical shapes such as chalices, urns and reliefs. Much of Gordon’s sculpture is based on the human form. We work in porcelain, stoneware and earthenware clays and paint and draw upon the surfaces in a variety of techniques. Martha's photography portrays her interest in textures and compositions in an abstract manner.
