Martha James

I received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Calgary in 1976. After moving to Quadra Island with my husband, Gordon James, we established James Pottery. Our studio and gallery allow me to work and display the functional and sculptural ceramics, drawings and photographs that I create. I have also exhibited my work nationally and internationally.
My work is a reflection of my life and surroundings on Quadra Island. My functional wares are intended to enhance the experience at the dining table as well as being decorative. The sculptural work is based on classical shapes such as chalices, urns and reliefs.. I work in porcelain, stoneware and earthenware clays and I paint and draw upon the surfaces in a variety of techniques. My photography portrays my interest in textures and compositions in an abstract manner.
